Youth Tour

Pictured above are the top finalists from our 2012 Youth Tour Essay Contest. They are Madlyn Jennings of New Bloomfield High School, Josh Evans of Rockbridge High School, and Haley McGrath of Fulton High School. These three enjoyed an all expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. this past June, joining about 80 other high school juniors from across Missouri and about 1500 from across the U.S. They toured national monuments and memorials of our nation's capitol, met with leaders in Congress, heard great speakers and made many new connections and friends. The trip was sponsored by the Association of Missouri Electric Cooperatives and the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association.
The three were awarded the trip by competing in Callaway Electric Cooperative's annual Youth Tour Essay Contest. Each year this contest is sponsored for high school juniors living in or attending school in the Cooperative's service area. Participants write an essay on a topic chosen by the Cooperative, and in turn have a chance to win one of three all expense paid, week long trips to Washington, D.C. Three runner ups receive tution to a nationally recognized 3 day leadership conference (Cooperative Youth Conference and Leadership Experience-CYCLE) held in Jefferson City and also hosted by Missouri's electric cooperatives.
The Youth Tour is a wonderful opportunity, first thought of by the then Senator Lyndon Johnson in the late 1950s. Callaway Electric has participated in the program as far back as 1966.
